Quality management system is concerned with development of organizational goals. ISO
9001 specifies that quality objectives shall measurable and also consistent with the quality
policy stated by company.
Objective must be linked to measurable targets and with the time and resources needed for
their fulfilment considered. Objectives and targets should be monitored and reviewed to
ensure that the company’s goals are fulfilled over long term. If quality objectives are not
meeting performance requirement, then the organizational goals may have been too
ambitious.
Quality objectives can be broken down into a number of different types, each of which must
be carefully created and with all being important to the fulfilment of the company’s overall
business. These types are:
-

Company and management objectives: designed to meet long term organizational
goals through policies.

-

Monitoring objectives: to meet medium and short term objectives through control.

-

Improvement objectives: designed to meet short term objectives and targets
through improvement actions.

The goals, targets and objectives should be formalised through documentation with realistic
timeframe set for their accomplishment. Objective should originate from executive
management be seen clearly to support the policy and goals of the company. This aspect is
essential in encouraging employees to see the relevance of their work in meeting objectives.
A company needs to find a way of planning how quality goals, objectives and targets will be
developed, implemented, measured and improved. Many organizations seek to do this
through the use of quality programme, which determine the following:

Requirements and development of quality objectives and targets in relation to
quality policy and goals;

Identification and designation of responsibilities for quality management within
organization structure.

Method and timeframe by which quality objectives and target will be met.

Development of planning programme of this type can take many forms, but it is traditional
to use Gantt, or bar, chart against timescales. See below example:
